Homework journals

The work you agreed in the session, as a journal your client writes into.

Cogent reads the session, finds the between-session work the two of you actually settled on, and writes each one as a prompt your client can answer in their own words. You check every prompt against the words it came from before anything is sent.

01Drawn from the session

It finds what you agreed. It does not decide what the homework should be.

Pick the sessions to read and Cogent looks for the between-session work that was proposed and taken up: something you suggested and your client accepted, something they raised that you supported, a plan the two of you settled on loosely. Each one comes back as an open prompt written to your client in the second person, in their own words and images where the session gives them.

If nothing was agreed, it says so rather than offering you something plausible. That is a useful answer, and it is the one the design is built to allow.

02The quote is the point

Every prompt carries the words from the session it came from.

Each prompt is shown to you beside a verbatim quote from the session, so you can see the exchange it was taken from and judge whether it holds. A prompt that cannot be quoted is discarded before it reaches you. Read the prompt against the quote, edit anything you want, delete what you do not, and add prompts of your own.

Nothing is sent and no link exists until you approve it.

03If you do not transcribe

You can write the whole journal yourself.

Not everyone records sessions, and a journal of your own prompts is a journal. Start one without selecting any session and you get a blank draft to write into, with no AI involved at any point. The rest of it works the same way.

04Your client's side

A page they open once, write into over a few sittings, and send when ready.

You approve the journal and get a link to send however you already reach them. There is no account and nothing to install. What they write is saved on their own device as they go, so they can close the page and come back to it across the week, and it reaches you only when they choose to send it. The link works once and expires after fourteen days.

05What it is not

Nothing reads what your client writes back.

No summary, no scoring, no scan for anything. What they write is encrypted when it arrives and is decrypted when you open it, and nothing automated looks at it in between. That is a deliberate decision, and it is why your client is told plainly, before they write a word, that the journal is not monitored and is not a way to reach you between sessions, with crisis numbers alongside. They see that once and confirm it, and the numbers stay in the footer afterwards.

Whether a particular client should be offered a journal at all is your judgement, and the product does not substitute for it.

06When it comes back

It appears in the folder and on your dashboard until you have read it.

You get an email telling you something has arrived, carrying nothing your client wrote and no client details. The journal sits in their folder alongside the formulation and the session notes, and in a Waiting for you list on your dashboard until you mark it read, so a returned journal does not depend on remembering which folder it was in.

Three journals are included on the free plan. Preparing drafts is unlimited; the allowance is spent when you approve a link.
